I can't believe we're already on Block 9 in the Nothing but Love Quilt Along! Time is whizzing on by don't you think?!
This new block is named Infatuation, to me that is like puppy love or the nicer version of obsessed (lol). You may have noticed I'm a bit infatuated with heart quilts - haha!
So this is another fun block that uses the stitch and flip technique to make the hearts although we are using a different orientation this time. And similar to Adoration and Admiration blocks there are 4 identical patches for you to play with your fabric colors and patterns!
The Block Pattern
If you haven't tried switching your background and main colors this pattern is designed with doing just that. However, if you don't want to please feel free to keep all of the backgrounds the same.
You can see I decided to change my layout for my second quilt, so that the hearts are "kissing" their points, but I still have that nice center diamond. Before you sew them together; play with your blocks and consider some alternative options.
I also used a different lavender fabric for each heart patch (or unit), so it was really fun! If you are new to playing with color, my tip is to keep the shades balanced in your block. in this example I put my darkest shades of lavender opposite (diagonal from) each other.
If you're ready, set, go to play with your fabrics, here is the downloadable pattern for Block 9 -Infatuation:

Making the Infatuation Block - Tips and Tutorial
Cut all the pieces out and match them up. I noticed that I take pictures of this aspect of my process every time. I came to realize this methodology helps me make sure that I have all the pieces and by putting them together (main piece with the corner pieces that will be stitch and flipped) it helps me sew them in a more timely manner. I relate it to the "mise en place" practice when cooking which means to gather all your ingredients and implements, so you can be organized and efficient when you cook.
This time our heart is being made with a top half and bottom half. So using the stitch and flip method described in the pattern, add corners to the top quarters and bottom half of your heart patches. Remember: stitch, press, trim, and press seam open, repeat for second corner.
Once the heart sections are made, join the top sections (matching the center corners to make the point), and then sew the two halves together after pressing the center seam open.
Voila! Repeat to make all 4 heart patches.
Then play with your layout - here are some other options that make different centers (plus you can flip my purple one, so that all the top points kiss).
When you have decided, sew the two patches together to make two rows. Then sew the two rows together to complete the block.
Press the seams open.
Baste and get ready to quilt!
