I have an exciting new product for you - sew simple pillowcase panels! If you’re looking for a fun and super quick project, sewing your own pillowcase is the perfect choice. I love to make holiday pillowcases for my grandkiddos, and with these panels it can be done in just a couple hours! Whether you’re new to sewing or have years of experience, making a pillowcase is a straightforward project that anyone can tackle. Let's get sewing!
Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need. Here’s a checklist of essential supplies for crafting your pillowcase:
Fabric: You can go to my Spoonflower shop to browse "Sew Simple Pillowcase Panels" with the link below:
polka_dot_peep_designs's shop on Spoonflower: fabric, wallpaper and home decor
You will need 1 yard of Petal Signature Cotton. Other fabrics can be used but they are printed wider so there will be extra print but not a full repeat.
Sewing Machine
Thread: Select thread that matches or contrasts with your cuff color as that is the only thread that is visible.
Scissors or Rotary Cutting System
Iron & Board
Pins (optional)
Once you have these materials, you're just a few steps away from creating something special!
No Construction Needed
The great thing about these panels is that all the measuring and piecing is done for you AND it comes with directions printed on the panel, so you don't need to write this down!
Start by trimming off the directions on the dashed line and the extra white border on the other 3 sides. You can use scissors but I prefer my rotary cutter and ruler. In this video I am using my Grace True Cut ruler and rotary cutter which I LOVE!
Then follow the directions for ironing the edge of the cuff (or open end of the pillow) and get ready to SEW!
Sew and Press to Success
As printed on the panel, you will sew the edge (hem) of the cuff down with 2 rows of topstitching for a professional look. Then fold and check that all the remaining edges are aligned. Sometimes the printing is not all the way "square" so you may need to trim them up just a tad.
The directions are written for finishing the pillowcase with a French seam which means there will not be any raw edges to fray.
**If you are uninterested in this technique then you may also fold the fabric with right sides together and stitch around with a quarter inch seam and be done,
My tips for sewing around the pillowcase are:
1 - Pin the edges if you like to keep the fabric from shifting.
2 - Always "lock" or backstitch your starts and stops.
3 - Snip the corners off to reduce bulk when turning out the corners.
Sew around the edges once on the right-side, press, flip inside-out, and then sew around the inside. Turn right-side out and see the magic!
Add Personal Touches
If you would like to personalize your creation further. I recommend doing this BEFORE the pillowcase construction. Here are a few ideas to enhance your design:
Embroidery/Hand-stitching: Add initials or small designs to further customize.
Embellishments: Use Chenille-It, ricrac, pompom trim to add some textural elements to the design.
Appliqué: Fuse and sew additional fabric shapes or letters on top of your pillowcase to add texture and interest.
These unique touches can transform a simple pillowcase into a sentimental gift.
I hope you LOVE these panels and enjoy making these pillowcases for yourself and all your loved ones! I'd love to see, so please tag me on Facebook or Instagram @polksdotpeepquiltsetc or #sewsimplepillowcase
